We
left as the early morning sun made the island of Hiva Oa glow in our
wake.
The
peak you see there is Mt. Tevaitiu, 3,901 feet high! The highest
peak in Hiva Oa.
Up
there in the distance, are the mountains of Fatu Hiva. Our first
stop on this Marquesan tour, will also be our last.
The
hills are looking green as they get closer. That is Hanavave Bay up
ahead, also known as the Bay of Virgins.
As
we arrive at the island, the dolphins are so excited to see us
return, they put on this show for our video recorder. What a
splash!!
They
were having fun surfing the swells.
7
dolphin riding our bow wave.
The
valley is opening up as we sail in.
The
sentry in the stone is still on watch over the bay.
An
unusual site for us, a bunch of fish strips hung on lines to dry over
the rocks.
After
filling up with the delicious fresh water here and saying good buy to
our friends, we were ready to depart. We decided to sail around the
East side on our way, as not many people pass to the windward side of
an island. This is the Northern most point.
The
windward side proved to be quite dramatic with many deep crevasses in
the mountain.
This
one seemed to have an high valley as well.
I
imagine these big peaks to be giant crystals trying to escape the
earth, some ancient days ago.
As
the sun rises, so does the moisture from the island, which creates a
cloud above the peaks.
A
deep dark valley, do you think King Kong lives up there?!?
At
the top we see rocks that look like heads peaking over the mountain.
This
little off set island is glowing green in the sun and a steep dark
cliff is behind it.
The
South end of the island.
More
sheer vertical jungle covered cliffs, looks
like giant claw marks in the mountain side, maybe King Kong did live
here?!
As
we were just getting sad, that we were again leaving the Marquesas,
the dolphins came to cheer us up. Leaping in the air again!!
Splash!
This
one is doing a pirouette!!
Even
this boobie bird flew out to say goodbye.
Dolphins
to the left,
Dolphins
off the bow.
And
so ends 3 months in the Marquesas. Fairwinds to the Isles of Men,
giant Emeralds shining from the sea. Wonder if we will ever pass
this way again........
